
Student visa – Subclass 500 / 590
Providing educational opportunities for overseas students is a vital and growing export market for Australia’s economy. The education system and the Australian academic institutions are highly ranked globally and Australia is in the world leading three countries for international education together with the US and the UK. Every year there are over 600,000 international students in Australia and the numbers are consistently growing.
Visa purpose
Genuine intention to enter Australia for temporary academic development, general academic experience, or career change. There are two visa subclasses:
Subclass 500 – General student visa for all students over the age of 18 and all educational levels.
Subclass 590 (Student Guardian Visa) – Visa for guardians to students who are under the age of 18. The person applying as a guardian must be at least 18 years old.
Visa period
The student visa period will depend in the academic program duration you are undertaking. The Department of Home Affairs grants the visa for the length of the course/s enrolled + 1-2 months after the course end date.
Visa eligibility and factors
- There is no age limit, but the visa application is subject to risk factors, depending on your country of passport and the educational institute you are enrolled to
- You can bring your family and/or dependants with you
- You must meet the genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) criteria. Please contact us for further details about the GTE criteria and its requirements
- You should meet English Language requirements, depending on your risk factor
- You should meet financial capacity requirements and you will need to declare that you have access to sufficient funds to support your travel, study and living costs in Australia
- Must hold a medical insurance (OSHC) for the full visa duration. We can support you to acquire an insurance policy with one of our insurance company partners
- Meet general Health and Character requirements

Visa Pathway
Upon your academic pathway completion, some student visa holders may be eligible to apply for further stay in Australia under visa subclass 485 (Temporary Graduate) or the Skilled Migration program.
